Chapter 142: Indifference

"I think it's pretty good." He looked at Ji Meiqing's expression and said slowly.

Her face beamed with excitement and anticipation; she was no longer the same Ji Meiqing as before. The current Ji Meiqing was driven more by greed for money…

She was stunned when she saw that there was no smile in his eyes... and didn't know how to deal with it.

"What's wrong with you?" She didn't know why Lu Yu had changed so much. His eyes looked at her so unfamiliar, as if he had never seen her like this before.

Lu Yu regained his composure and said calmly, "It's nothing, I'm just a little tired."

"Oh..." She also lost interest in speaking. Looking at him, all she could say in the end was, "Get some rest."

"Hmm..." He left without looking back, leaving her alone in the room feeling strange... Life is just so unpredictable, just like Lu Yu, she was starting to not understand him anymore.

Lu Yu didn't say anything after that; she just went and did it. She tidied up the house she bought and posted notices. The house she originally bought to use as a dormitory was also vacant, and she took some time to go and check on it.

There's nothing going on over there; the beds in the room are all set up, just waiting for someone to come in and sleep.

She walked into the dye shop, where it seemed to be being cleaned, and people were moving around. Ji Meiqing curiously went inside. The main room hadn't been cleaned yet; it was a mess, just like yesterday.

Ji Meiqing stood at the door and saw the people on the other side of the house.

He was dressed in a long blue robe and looked somewhat weak. He covered his mouth and coughed as he cleaned the place.

"Are you OK."

She asked softly, walking to his side. The man was startled, seemingly not expecting anyone to appear, but then he thought that the only person who could be here besides the owner of the place would be him. He relaxed, not daring to look her in the eye.

"I'm fine, thank you for your concern, Madam." He took a step back, intending to let her leave, and said, "It's a bit dirty here, Madam, please go out first."

"It's nothing, I just came to take a look." She looked around, half clean and half messy. "About when it will be cleaned up."

"Today then." He coughed twice more.

She looked at him closely and suddenly felt that she had seen him somewhere before. She exclaimed in surprise, "Aren't you that scholar?"

"Does Madam recognize me?" His puzzled expression clearly indicated that he no longer remembered him.

She thought for a moment and then said directly, "I saw you when I went to buy books that day. You were selling books."

He thought for a moment, then realized what was going on, and a look of understanding immediately appeared on his face. Ji Meiqing knew at a glance, "You remember now?"

"It's you."

"Yes... how could you do these things?"

She was somewhat surprised, but even more puzzled.

"My surname is Yang... My family has fallen on hard times, so I had no choice but to sell those books." He gave a bitter laugh, his face full of helplessness.

Looking at him like this, she didn't know what to say.

After pausing for a while, she said again, "You take your time cleaning, I'll go take a look around elsewhere first."

"Please take care, Madam." He glanced outside.

Ji Meiqing left this place and went to take a look at another place.

The news from the Jiang family had arrived, and the time had been agreed upon, so Ji Meiqing went there directly.

The people sent by the Jiang family were at the inn, and she directly stated her purpose.

After waiting a while, someone came down from upstairs. Ji Meiqing nodded politely to him, "Hello, Mr. Lin."

“My surname is Lin, not ‘sir’.” He laughed heartily.

Ji Meiqing exchanged some pleasantries with him and waited for him to come down before explaining her purpose. Fearing he might disagree, she added, "A few days ago, a young master from the Jiang family discussed a business deal with me. Here is the deal; Mr. Lin, if you don't mind, you can take a look."

"Young Master Jiang?" He hesitated for a moment, then took the transaction slip and examined it carefully before saying in a deep voice, "This is indeed the mark of the Jiang family, but I'm not sure if it belongs to the Jiang family."

"That's it then. He claims to be Jiang Ziyi. I wonder..."

Mr. Lin glanced at her and said indifferently, "There is no young master named Jiang Ziyi in the Jiang family, nor in any of the collateral branches."

"Feel sorry."

"It's alright," he said casually, handing the form back to her. "Come with me."

Ji Meiqing followed him upstairs. The room was furnished very simply, and she glanced at it before looking away.

"Regarding the Jiang family... I don't think I have a say in how your wine is, but we can only discuss cooperation in detail if the wine satisfies our Jiang family head."

Ji Meiqing replied knowingly, "Of course, if you need some, we can send some over tomorrow."

"That's good then. As for Jiang Ziyi..."

“We also have a business relationship. If Mr. Lin doesn’t mind, we can meet in a few days.” She smiled slightly.

"No need to call me Mr. Lin. I'm so old. Just call me Uncle Lin like everyone else."

Ji Meiqing readily agreed and the two exchanged a smile.

As dusk fell, she returned home looking tired, just as usual. The food on the table was being served. She glanced at it and said, "You don't need to wait for me to eat anymore. You can eat on your own before I get home, so you don't go hungry."

"Let's eat together," Lu Yu said casually, adding rice and soup and handing it to Ji Meiqing naturally, while asking, "How did things go today?"

"It's alright." She swallowed a mouthful of soup, then looked at the food on the plate in front of her. Life seemed so ordinary, as if it had been going on for decades.

But she knew there was a problem between them.

After taking another bite of food, Ji Meiqing suddenly felt nauseous, covered her mouth, and walked outside. Her stomach churned, and she felt so uncomfortable that she wanted to cry.

They all looked at Ji Meiqing, and then turned their gaze to Lu Yu.

“She’s not.” Lu Yu denied it outright, then got up to look at her.

"How are you?" He appeared behind her. Ji Meiqing opened her mouth wide and shook her head in pain. She couldn't answer his question.

Lu Yu took one of her hands and examined it carefully.

"I'm fine." She stood up and pulled her hand back. "I'm not pregnant."

"That's not what I meant," Lu Yu said helplessly. "I just wanted to see what was wrong with you."

"It's an old problem," she said casually, but then paused for a second and explained, "Anyway, it's nothing serious. Let's go back and eat."

"Don't push yourself too hard." He took her hand. "Your health isn't good to begin with."

The warmth on her wrist brought a sense of comfort, but Ji Meiqing felt completely at a loss.
