Chapter 222: Surprise
Ji Meiqing ran home, panting, and took a sip of tea. She didn't need to stay there any longer to imagine what would happen. Ji Meiqing wasn't one to kick someone when they were down, but they had tried to harm her repeatedly, so it wouldn't be too much to teach them a lesson.
Lu Yu brought some food and saw Ji Meiqing looking quite happy as soon as he entered. He put the food on the table, sat down next to her, and observed her for a while before Ji Meiqing noticed that there was someone else beside her.
"When did you come here?"
"It's been a while. I got you some food. What were you thinking about so intently?" Lu Yu asked as he served her rice when she came out of her reverie.
“I did a good deed today. I let Tian Cuiwei see with her own eyes how Ji Tianzhuo was fooling around outside. Actually, I didn’t want to do this, but they have been causing us trouble time and time again, so we have to fight back…” Ji Meiqing told Lu Yu the whole story.
Lu Yu didn't comment on the matter; instead, he changed the subject, saying, "I'll take you somewhere tomorrow."
"Huh? Where are we going? Our business is very busy." Sure enough, Ji Meiqing's attention was diverted.
"I've already taken care of the business. And don't worry, it won't take up too much time. I won't tell you where we're going yet," Lu Yu said, keeping everyone in suspense. "Finish what you've eaten, then I'll clean up and you can get some rest."
"Ah."
That night, Ji Meiqing tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. It wasn't that she didn't want to sleep, but she kept thinking about where Lu Yu would take her. She dismissed all her guesses, and finally, feeling restless, she went to a place she somewhat liked—the rooftop.
What's comforting is that the night sky is beautiful tonight, full of stars and a big moon. Naturally, this kind of setting calls for homemade wine. Having been here for so long, I've gotten used to life here, and I'm actually a little reluctant to go back. Although I don't know what the future holds, Ji Meiqing's personality is always forward-looking. Besides, I'm not fighting alone.
Although she wasn't quite satisfied after finishing a small jar of wine, it did alleviate some of her frustration, and she was also somewhat pleased with how much her alcohol tolerance had improved recently. To ensure she could get up tomorrow, Ji Meiqing decided to go to sleep. Little did she know that her every move was being observed by someone who wasn't asleep, without her noticing.
The next morning, Lu Yu got up early. Seeing that Ji Meiqing was still asleep, he prepared breakfast and then knocked on Ji Meiqing's door. Knock knock knock knock knock "Meiqing, are you up? I made breakfast, come out and eat."
"Okay, I'll be right out," Ji Meiqing replied.
A short while later, the door creaked open. Ji Meiqing, who hadn't slept well the night before, came out yawning, her eyes showing faint dark circles.
Just as she sat down, waiting for Lu Yu to bring out the last dish, she heard a "gulp." Ji Meiqing gave Lu Yu an awkward smile. Lu Yu didn't laugh at her, but said with concern, "Are you hungry? Eat up, and I'll take you out after you finish."
Ji Meiqing didn't mince words and finished her breakfast in a flash. The two then prepared to set off.
Because the weather was still a bit chilly, Lu Yu brought an extra layer of clothing before leaving home to prevent Ji Meiqing from getting cold. No matter how Ji Meiqing subtly probed him on the way, Lu Yu firmly refused to tell her their final destination. Finally, Ji Meiqing got bored and stopped asking, closing her eyes to rest, as she needed to catch up on the sleep she had missed the previous day.
After a bumpy ride of an unknown amount of time, they finally came to a stop. Ji Meiqing and Lu Yu got out of the car and arrived at a place where performances were taking place. They went to a stall to watch; the performance wouldn't start for about fifteen minutes. Ji Meiqing glanced at some of the props; she recognized them—they were the props needed for a lion dance. She looked at Lu Yu.
Lu Yu was also looking at her. "So, do you like it? I see you work so hard every day, busy with your business day after day, and you haven't had a chance to really relax, so this is a surprise for you. Although I'm not quite sure if you'll like these things. After watching the lion dance, we'll go see some acrobatics." Lu Yu's sincere eyes were more beautiful than the stars in the night sky.
"Of course I like it, Brother Lu, thank you." Ji Meiqing took the initiative to kiss Lu Yu, all her unspoken words contained in that kiss.
Seeing that there was still some time before the performance started, Lu Yu found Ji Meiqing a place to sit and rest, with a good view of the show. He then went downstairs to buy some snacks.
He didn't return until the performance was about to begin, carrying a string of candied hawthorns in his left hand and a bag of roasted chestnuts in his right—a bountiful haul. He gave the candied hawthorns to Ji Meiqing and sat down next to her. Ji Meiqing ate one, "Mmm~ so sweet, so delicious. You should try one too." Ji Meiqing held the candied hawthorns to Lu Yu's lips and fed them to him. Lu Yu didn't actually like sweets, but seeing Ji Meiqing's gesture, he took a bite anyway.
"Is it delicious?" Ji Meiqing asked.
"It's okay, I don't really like sweets."
"Then why did you buy so much candy?" Ji Meiqing asked, puzzled.
"Because you like it, that's enough."
Ji Meiqing was about to say something when the drumbeats that signaled the start of the performance interrupted her, and their attention was diverted.
Then came pairs of lions entering the scene, each one unique and lifelike, displaying a variety of moves. Ji Meiqing had seen lion dances before transmigrating and had been deeply impressed, but the memories were somewhat hazy due to the passage of time. Now, those memories were rekindled. Although nearly a thousand years had passed since she last saw the lion dances, the essence remained unchanged. Ji Meiqing was still proud of this culture; culture transcends time.
After the lion dance ended, Ji Meiqing was still somewhat reluctant to leave. She looked at Lu Yu and noticed that he hadn't watched the performance. Actually, she had noticed from the beginning that Lu Yu wasn't watching the performance, but her attention was entirely focused on the show, so she hadn't paid much attention. Now, thinking back to how he had been peeling chestnuts and then glancing at her, she blushed instantly. It was a case of being admiring the scenery without realizing that she had become part of the scenery in someone else's eyes.
The small bowl in front of Lu Yu was filled with peeled chestnuts. He pushed it towards himself and said, "Eat up."
It turned out he had been peeling chestnuts for her the whole time. It was a small thing, but it still touched her. But Lu Yu didn't give her time to be touched and pulled Ji Meiqing to watch the acrobatics performance.
Acrobatics is even more dangerous than lion dancing. Ji Meiqing craned her neck to watch while eating chestnuts that Lu Yu was peeling. Actually, she was more looking forward to acrobatics than lion dancing. Lion dancing gives people a sense of awe and pride, but acrobatics gives people more surprise and satisfies their curiosity more, so she was more excited about it.
