Chapter 165: Discussion
They could still buy a breath or two, so Ji Meiqing helped him sit down. She then looked around the place; it was just an ordinary mountain stronghold, looking wealthy but actually not having much money.
"How about we do some business?" she shouted, her eyes showing no fear. "You bandits, I have a way to make your robberies legitimate."
"Oh?" The chieftain chuckled a few times, looking at his subordinates and then at Ji Meiqing. He didn't quite believe her claims that they could rob openly and honestly without fear of the authorities.
There's no such thing as a free lunch in this world.
He simply took Ji Meiqing's words as a joke.
"The idea I'm about to share will earn you money much faster than you could as a robber here. Want to hear it?"
“Listen, of course I’m listening.” He laughed loudly, looking at his subordinates, then squinting at Ji Meiqing. “You little wench are really interesting. After you finish talking, I’ll kill them all and make you my bandit wife.”
"Haha..." A burst of laughter erupted from below.
Ji Meiqing pretended not to hear and said what she was thinking.
"Bandits fear official roads the most. I'll partner with you to open a security escort agency. This way, we can not only make money but also cooperate with the government."
“We’re not afraid of those smooth-talking opportunists who live off women.” He clapped his hands, ignoring Ji Meiqing’s suggestion. In the blink of an eye, a number of bandits dressed in animal skins appeared outside the room.
Seeing this, the people around her immediately huddled together, ready to fight them. She stopped them, whispering, "It's no use, there are too many of them."
There were so many people, inside and out.
"I see you have so many people here, you must have considerable expenses on a daily basis. Why don't you think about what I said, so we can both benefit?"
She continued to try to persuade him.
"You think I'll agree just because you said that?" The leader squinted and said disdainfully, "Women are women after all, best left in bed to warm the bed. Men, arrest them all. Keep the women. Kill all the men."
The crowd below started to jeer. Ji Meiqing looked at the robber closest to her, who was also sizing her up with a malicious glint in his eyes.
"Did you wear the bracelet?" Lu Yu asked in her ear as he helped her up.
Ji Meiqing didn't understand what it meant, but she still showed it to him. Lu Yu took it off and then forcefully threw it in front of them.
The bracelet was made of hollow glass, and inside the glass was a medicinal liquid that emitted a strange fragrance when it fell to the ground. Lu Yu pulled her along, creating a path around them. Before they could react to what was happening, the air suddenly darkened, accompanied by a strange buzzing sound.
"Run!" he roared, and the people around him immediately ran outside. Ji Meiqing was also pulled outside by him.
She didn't pay attention to what the others looked like; in just a short while after escaping, the spot where she had been standing was now a hornet's nest. Ji Meiqing looked on, terrified.
Lu Yu coughed twice, his face growing paler.
"What is this?" she asked, her face pale, still shocked by what Lu Yu had given her.
"The dew from the royal jelly was originally meant to save your life." He coughed twice and explained calmly, "You are weak, and there is an ingredient in the medicine you are taking that can counteract the royal jelly, so you will be fine even if you don't come out."
The more Hua talked, the paler his face became. Ji Meiqing felt a dampness on his back, and when she brought it to her face, she saw a dark red bloodstain.
She was even more surprised. "What happened to you? How come you have a wound on your back?"
"I just fell." He covered his mouth and remained silent for a moment. There was something vaguely visible between his pale fingers; it was obvious he was lost in thought without even looking.
Ji Meiqing was even more annoyed. Not only had she failed to save anyone, she had also injured someone. She looked around at the houses and then led her men inside. The bandits and robbers who had been watching the show earlier avoided them like the plague, fearing that they might get into trouble and end up like that reckless chieftain.
As soon as she entered the house, she immediately ordered the bandits inside, "Go and bring me hot water and some wound medicine."
"Yes...yes." They didn't dare to neglect this distinguished guest and all rushed off to serve. Before long, everything she wanted was brought over.
The room was made of mud and did not face south as is traditionally the case, so it received no sunlight and was extremely dark.
Ji Meiqing had no choice but to bring over the candlestick to look at it.
"Don't move." To get a better look, she had to get very close, and a strand of her hair fell directly onto his back, the silky touch making him feel a little itchy.
Lu Yu was about to scratch when Ji Meiqing's scolding startled him back down. She took some warm water and wiped the bloodstains around his wound. She didn't know what he had hit when he fell, which caused a protrusion on his back.
She touched him gently, and Lu Yu shrank back in fright. Ji Meiqing watched, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Are you alright?" she suddenly asked, her voice soft and gentle, a stark contrast to her previous attitude. If the Ji Meiqing of the past still held a hint of wariness in her eyes and maintained a respectful distance when they talked, it was now that her voice had softened completely, like that of a girl who had done something wrong.
Looking at her pitiful appearance, Lu Yu didn't know what to say.
"Does it hurt a lot?" she cried out again, then looked at the bulge on her back, which, if she wasn't mistaken, was bone. She had no medical skills and no way to move it back.
After treating the wound, she bandaged it tightly with strips of cloth. Seeing that she was still like this, Lu Yu couldn't help but say, "It's just a small injury, it'll be fine after the doctor takes a look."
Ji Meiqing was a little worried, so she told him to stay in bed and not to go anywhere. She went out herself to pour out the water and then asked a maid from the village to come and take care of Lu Yu.
The building, riddled with wasps, is currently being cleaned. Many people are using torches to drive away the wasps that have landed on it, and she watches the terrifying sight.
Suddenly there was a commotion inside. A humanoid wasp emerged from within, its body covered in wasps. It flailing its arms and legs as it came out, then fell straight down.
Fearing that the wasps would fly onto them, no one went forward, and some even threw away their torches out of fear.
The torches kicked up a cloud of black smoke on the man, but the wasps seemed to have their eyes on him; even as they were burned to death, they did not fly off his body.
This horrifying scene unfolded right before her eyes.
There was also a faint aroma of something being roasted in the air.
