Chapter 109: The Wedding
Out of consideration for Ji Meiqing, they dared not speak out against her.
Rouge pretended not to see anything and continued applying makeup to her. She used her hands very lightly, and the powder and rouge in the box were used by her with great skill and ease. It didn't look like she was applying makeup, but rather like she was painting an exquisite watercolor painting.
"Lift your head slightly," she said softly, her expression focused. Ji Meiqing followed her instructions.
As she finished applying her last lip makeup, several red papers were placed in front of her. She reached for them but was stopped. Rouge shook her head calmly and said, "No rush, let's wait until tonight. Use this first."
She took out the lip rouge she had brought and applied it to Ji Meiqing's lips. Ji Meiqing subconsciously pursed her lips, and the lip rouge smudged naturally. Combined with her entire face, it exuded a restrained yet alluring charm.
If she were willing to become a demon, all it would take is a few actions and a glance.
But if she wanted to be a proper lady from a respectable family, all she needed to do was be dignified.
Ji Meiqing glanced at it and then looked away. Yanzhi, on the other hand, didn't seem to care and tidied up the things on the table.
The matchmaker brought an apple over and placed it in her hand, while looking her over with admiration in her eyes. Ji Meiqing glanced at her and then lowered her eyes again.
Madam Li also came over to take a look, and she couldn't hide her true feelings, praising directly, "This Rouge Girl's skills are truly excellent."
"Don't you know who I am?" she snorted smugly, but still politely and aloofly replied, "Thank you for the compliment."
Madam Li brought over the cooked dumplings and said gently, "Miss, please eat these dumplings first. Someone will be coming to pick you up soon."
"Thank you." She wiped the contents of her lips with a handkerchief before starting to eat. She ate a few of the cabbage and pork dumplings when the sound of suona horns came from outside. Li Ming knocked on the door to announce, "They're here."
"Eat quickly," Li urged. She glanced at the door, somewhat uneasy, but still went over, said something to Li Ming, and then returned.
After Ji Meiqing finished eating, Yanzhi quickly touched up her makeup and then put the phoenix crown on her head. The heavy crown weighed down on her neck, almost breaking it, but thankfully the wedding attendant was there to support her, which made her feel a little better.
She walked at a leisurely pace, and several people escorted her out of the room and downstairs.
Lu Yu was already waiting for her outside. His red wedding attire accentuated his handsome features, making him look especially festive.
He was already handsome, and with this makeover, he looked just like the elegant young man described in the poem. A crowd had gathered around him, with young women and married women discussing him.
Several of them blushed and lowered their heads.
Lu Yu just stared at the doorway, wondering when she would come out and what she would look like when she was about to get married.
After a while, and after being urged three times, he finally came out.
She was helped into the bridal sedan chair, her head covered by a veil, and the beads in front of her swayed with her movements. Her feelings were much like those beads.
She finally managed to get into the sedan chair and tried to calm herself down. The matchmaker didn't give her anything, just an apple.
The red apple, with its faint fruity aroma, made her feel neither hungry nor full. Looking at the apple, she carefully considered whether or not to eat it.
The sedan chair suddenly lurched, nearly throwing her out. Luckily, she reacted quickly and grabbed the window frame, but the apple fell to the ground and was about to roll out.
Ji Meiqing was startled and reached out to grab him, but she didn't expect to be thrown out like that. The people carrying the sedan chair were stunned.
Lu Yu, who was leading the way, was also stunned. Ji Meiqing was a little embarrassed. She adjusted her wedding veil and quickly returned to the car.
"Continue." Lu Yu turned around and started walking forward. The matchmaker urged them on, then whispered a warning to pretend they hadn't seen what had just happened.
There was nothing unusual happening outside; the sedan chair bearers were carrying it, the musicians were playing, and everything proceeded as planned. She breathed a sigh of relief, afraid that what had just happened would be remembered.
Looking at the apple in her hand, she decided to eat it anyway. She almost caused an even bigger embarrassment because of an apple; she absolutely had to eat it.
Ji Meiqing took a bite, and juice splashed directly onto her face. She wiped it off nonchalantly and continued eating.
The lip rouge had smeared all over the apple, the red mark clearly visible on the yellow flesh. Ji Meiqing was startled, afraid of ruining her makeup, so she pulled out a small mirror to check.
Seeing that there was nothing on her face, she breathed a sigh of relief. She was caught in a dilemma: whether to eat the apple or not. The key was that she couldn't throw it away. Ji Meiqing simply took out her handkerchief, wrapped the apple in it, and then stuffed it into a corner.
She pretended that nothing had happened, that nothing had occurred. She sat obediently until the sedan chair stopped.
The sedan door was kicked three times lightly, then the curtain was lifted. Ji Meiqing felt the veil in front of her light up, and she knew that there was a hand under the veil. She understood and reached out to place it on the veil.
Lu Yu took her out, then carried her across the fire basin to ward off evil spirits... He didn't even seem to be out of breath during the whole process.
Perhaps she had gotten up too early that morning, because she yawned. Lu Yu noticed and asked in a voice only the two of them could hear, "Didn't you get enough rest?"
"No, I got up too early." She leaned on his shoulder quite naturally.
Lu Yu smiled and carried her inside. The matchmaker said many auspicious words, and firecrackers outside kept going off. The sounds were crackling and popping, creating a very festive atmosphere.
She only landed when she reached the central hall.
The matchmaker quickly came over and said some trivial things before the wedding ceremony began. She shouted a few times before it ended.
Once they were led to the bridal chamber, that was the end of her affair. Lu Yu still had to go out to socialize, but as the two entered the room together, a rich fragrance filled the air. The scent was incredibly soothing, and she couldn't help but squint her eyes.
Sitting on the bed, Lu Yu wanted to lift her veil, but was stopped by the matchmaker.
"Young master, you need to go outside for a few drinks before you come back. The bride is right here, no rush."
Lu Yu hesitated for a moment, unsure whether he should reveal the truth first or not. Fortunately, Ji Meiqing didn't make things difficult for him and simply shook her head, signaling him to leave first.
"It's alright, lifting the veil is the same sooner or later." He refused the matchmaker's offer and directly lifted the red veil in front of her and placed it on the tray.
