Chapter 969 - 968: Nothing Serious
Chapter 969 - 968: Nothing Serious
Blowing at the mist rising from the teacup, Chu Chengrui picked it up and took a shallow sip. From his mouth, throat, stomach, and most importantly his heart, arose an indescribable comfort and clarity. With a mood completely different from before, Chu Chengrui sat back in the chair and continued to examine the health data about Chu Ge he had been looking at earlier.
He looked at each sheet slowly, and even if a page contained only a few dozen words, he could stare at it for several minutes, his usually slightly murky old eyes now shining brightly.
As if... an art enthusiast was admiring a masterful piece, destined to leave a significant mark in history.
Time passed for a long while, and finally, Chu Chengrui finished reviewing the papers one by one. He took another light sip of tea, gently put down the cup, and picked up a paper he had spent the longest time on before.
At this moment, the expression on Chu Chengrui's face changed again, like the most devout follower facing a deity to whom he would willingly give his soul. His right hand holding the paper was trembling slightly.
After some time, Chu Chengrui placed that paper with the others on the desk. He stacked the papers neatly together and carefully picked them up as if they were not just a small pile of lightweight sheets, but rare and fragile treasures.
After some thought, Chu Chengrui put the stack of papers into his usual briefcase. Just a few seconds after putting them in, he took them out again.
Looking around, he paced back and forth, finally deciding to put the papers in the safe in his room. Yet as soon as he closed the safe, he paused with a slight frown, reopened it, and stored the papers in a hidden compartment within the safe.
Having stored everything properly, Chu Chengrui stood beside the safe for more than five minutes before taking out his phone and making a call.
After the call, Chu Chengrui took a few deep breaths, left his room, and approached Chu Shiyao's bedroom door, knocking gently yet firmly.
"Who is it?" It took almost a minute before Chu Shiyao's groggy voice came from behind the door.
During Chu Ge's hospitalization, she and Qin Ruojing stayed at the hospital every day, unable to eat or sleep well, leaving her utterly exhausted.
Yesterday, when Chu Ge woke up from a coma, a great weight was finally lifted from Chu Shiyao's heart. She slept deeply, and even though it was already past ten now, she hadn't gotten up yet.
Chu Chengrui's voice was affectionate, teasingly saying, "Yaoyao, it's me. The sun's already shining, would you still be in bed?"
"Oh, Old Chu, I'm indeed still in bed. Is there something up? If it's nothing urgent, let me sleep a bit longer."
Yawning, Chu Shiyao turned over slightly, lazily responding. Although she still didn't call Chu Chengrui "Grandpa" and instead used the seemingly disrespectful "Old Chu," there was a hint of recognition in her tone.
"Actually, it's nothing major. It's just that Chu Ge has been discharged from the hospital. You can continue sleeping if you want; we can discuss it after you wake up."
"Oh, so Chu Ge's been discharged, huh? Then I'll..." Chu Shiyao muttered, half asleep, but her words abruptly stopped. She suddenly sat up straight, "Wait, Old Chu, what did you say?"
A slight smile played on Chu Chengrui's lips, not at all surprised by Chu Shiyao's reaction.
"Child, didn't you hear clearly? If you haven't had enough sleep, just rest a bit more; don't rush to get up."
Just as Chu Shiyao finished speaking, there was the sound of hurried footsteps from inside the room. Wrapped in a robe, she flung the door open with a bang.
"Old Chu, you aren't joking with me, are you? Chu Ge just woke from a coma yesterday, and today he's discharged? Is he crazy, or is the hospital crazy? This is utterly irresponsible towards his health!"
Just like when Chu Chengrui first heard the news, Chu Shiyao furrowed her brows tightly, her face full of disbelief.
"I don't really know the specifics either. I only found out when I went to the hospital just now. According to the hospital, it was Chu Ge who insisted on being discharged. Don't worry; if he requested it himself, he must have his reasons. You get dressed first, and I'll wait for you in the dining room. We can talk more at breakfast, okay?"
With a kind smile, Chu Chengrui turned and headed towards the dining room.
In less than five minutes, Chu Shiyao appeared in the dining room, sitting at the table opposite Chu Chengrui. She hadn't even settled into her seat fully when she urgently began asking questions.
"Old Chu, quickly tell me what's going on. Why was Chu Ge discharged, and what is he thinking?"
At this moment, Chu Chengrui's expression was devoid of the earlier fervor. He looked like a kind and amiable old man. Smiling, he shook his head and pushed a cup of hot milk toward Chu Shiyao.
"Yaoyao, eat first. You haven't been eating properly lately. Whatever you want to say, wait until you've finished this meal."
"Come on, just say it. I'm not hungry. Who has an appetite right after getting up?"
Chu Shiyao didn't even glance at the steaming hot milk or the array of exquisite breakfast items on the table. Her eyes were fixed on Chu Chengrui, looking extremely anxious.
Chu Chengrui chuckled with affection, picked up the cup of milk again, and handed it to Chu Shiyao, "Eat and drink well before we talk."
"Ah, you're really...!"
Chu Shiyao stomped her foot in frustration, took the cup of milk with a helpless expression, and drank it all in one go. Then, she wolfed down some of the other breakfast items. Before she even swallowed everything, she mumbled, "I'm full. Can I talk now?"
"Hehe... You kid, eating so fast, aren't you afraid of choking?"
Chu Shiyao's eyelids twitched. The reason she was eating so quickly was to find out about Chu Ge's situation. If Chu Chengrui didn't speak soon, she would truly go crazy.
"Alright, I know you're anxious. I won't say much this time, but don't make it a habit, okay?" Chu Chengrui indulgently handed Chu Shiyao a napkin. After she roughly wiped the corners of her mouth, he smiled and began speaking.
"Actually, there's not much to say. It's just that Chu Ge himself asked to be discharged. His wife, Qin Ruojing, agreed and handled the discharge procedures for him. So, he was discharged early this morning. As for his health, I asked someone to look into it as well. He's recovering well. Although being discharged now isn't entirely advisable, since his injuries are superficial, recuperating at home isn't out of the question."
As soon as Chu Chengrui finished speaking, Chu Shiyao immediately said anxiously, "But, even if home is good, it still doesn't have the comprehensive medical facilities of a hospital. Even if Qin Ruojing cares about him, she's a businesswoman and doesn't know how to nurse him. Isn't this nonsense?"
Chu Chengrui nodded, "To be honest, I think so too. However, since they've already decided, I assume they will hire some professional medical staff to take care of Chu Ge at home, right?"
"Why hire others? I'm a nurse! No, I have to go take care of Chu Ge. I won't be at ease leaving it to others."
After saying that, Chu Shiyao got up from the table, ready to leave the villa in a hurried manner to find Chu Ge.
Just two steps out, her wrist was grabbed by Chu Chengrui. Her brows, already knit together, furrowed even tighter. She was about to speak when Chu Chengrui beat her to it with a question.
"Yaoyao, do you think it's really appropriate for you to go over like this? No matter how good Chu Ge is, he's married. Won't you feel awkward facing him and his wife?"
Chu Shiyao paused, her gaze slightly shifting.
Chu Chengrui continued, "When he was hospitalized, it was barely acceptable for you to be there with him, but now... if you insist on staying by his side, is that really appropriate?"
"Yaoyao, have you ever wondered why, as your elder, I've never interfered in your relationship with Chu Ge?"
Chu Shiyao remained silent. However, after Chu Chengrui finished speaking, her eyes wandered even more. How could she not have thought about this issue? It's just that she never found an answer that satisfied her.
"Yaoyao, just because I don't say anything doesn't mean I don't have thoughts in my heart. I just feel that you've grown up, and there's no need for me to say much about certain things. Moreover, all these years, I've always felt I owed your father, your mother, and you. So I only want you to be happy. No matter what you do, I am willing to support you, but..."
Chu Chengrui paused, and his usually indulgent and loving gaze gradually changed to one of seriousness and solemnity that Chu Shiyao had never seen in him before. That gaze was even somewhat piercing.
The atmosphere became somewhat heavy. Even for someone as carefree as Chu Shiyao, under Chu Chengrui's piercing gaze, her breathing began to become a bit uneven, feeling a strong pressure that made her tense.
Of course, for Chu Shiyao, the real pressure didn't come from Chu Chengrui's serious expression but from the question he posed.
Regarding her relationship with Chu Ge, she herself couldn't explain it. Were they buddies? Confidantes? Or something else?
The two locked eyes for about seven or eight seconds. Just as Chu Shiyao was feeling more and more breathless, Chu Chengrui finally spoke the words that followed his "but".
