Chapter 54 Zombie "New Humans"?
Chapter 54 Zombie "New Humans"?
DAY74
The morning after Pei Sihao and Pei Simin finished their phone call, Pei Simin arranged for a helicopter rescue team from his unit to pick them up and take them back to Beijing. However, on the way, the helicopter encountered several survivors calling for help on a building rooftop in S Province. The situation was extremely urgent, and after consulting with his superiors, the helicopter prioritized rescuing these survivors.
Under normal circumstances, a round trip by helicopter from Beijing to G City takes about three hours. After rescuing the survivors, they have plenty of time to fly to G City again.
Although Pei Simin is the commander of the largest security base in Beijing and currently the chief coordinator of the entire national anti-epidemic command center, he is already under scrutiny by many people, and even more so during this special period. He is somewhat similar to Wang Qiang of the G City security base, yet slightly different. There are quite a few people in Beijing who want to replace him, so he can no longer arrange for military helicopters to rescue his younger brother and has to temporarily abandon the plan.
On the morning of the third day, Pei Simin arranged for a team of trusted bodyguards from his family to pick up Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng in a helicopter prepared by Gu Yining. However, the helicopter was attacked by a large flock of birds as soon as it flew out of Beijing, and the helicopter was almost destroyed and the people on board died.
At that time, all the human survivors realized that the zombies had unknowingly trapped them in a fixed area by controlling animals. Almost all the large-scale rescue helicopters from various countries were unable to enter or leave the fixed area; once they did, they would be surrounded by countless birds.
In fact, the situation on land is similar. Whenever a vehicle enters or leaves these designated areas, it will be chased and surrounded by all sorts of domestic fowl and wild beasts. Finally, the zombies will appear and reap the benefits, turning the survivors into one of them.
After deliberation, the Pei and Gu families decided that Pei Siji, the second son of the Pei family, would lead a convoy to G City to bring back his younger brothers. However, the drive from Beijing to G City would take more than 20 hours each way. Although the convoy had a higher chance of successfully escaping the zombie-infested area, the journey across provinces and states was fraught with unpredictable dangers.
Pei Sihao was unwilling for his family to risk losing another son just to bring them back to Beijing. Besides, in G City, apart from not being in a safe base, they had food, drink, and shelter, so they could be said to be living a worry-free life, and might even be better off than if they had stayed in the base.
To put his family at ease, Pei Sihao had no choice but to agree to his mother's request to call her every day via satellite phone to let her know he was safe. In contrast, Gu Nanfeng's parents were much calmer. Perhaps because they were researchers and naturally cold-hearted and not good at expressing themselves, or perhaps because they had complete confidence in their son, they simply told Gu Nanfeng to be careful and take good care of himself before hanging up. This made Pei Sihao, who was being overly "cared for" by his mother, extremely envious.
DAY77
The seven people spent another two days huddled in the hotel suite. They barely slept during those two days, as flocks of birds were constantly throwing stones at every window of their rooms, making it impossible to sleep.
Lu Yuan even suspected that the zombie in the suit that they had hurled two grenades at wanted to kill them all, not even giving them the chance to become zombies themselves.
Over the past two days, they've been checking the sealing of all the pipes and the condition of every room's windows almost every few hours. If any gaps appear in the pipe seals, they can manually repair them.
But the windows are in a predicament. After being hit by stones of various sizes for more than 48 consecutive hours, even the bulletproof glass is now covered in scratches. They don't know how much longer these windows can last.
At noon, after checking all the windows and pipe openings again, the seven of them finally sat down at the table to eat lunch with peace of mind. For the past few days, they had been eating food recovered from the park's warehouse. After all, the hot dishes in Lu Yuan Space were becoming increasingly scarce for them, and everyone was a little reluctant to part with them, so they mainly relied on convenient food.
"We need to deal with that zombie in the suit first," Qin Yuan said while eating instant noodles.
"He didn't die even after being bombed twice, his health bar is too thick." Zhong Qiang thought of the two times Lu Yuan threw grenades, the zombies were within range, but they didn't seem to be hurt at all.
"It's unlikely that the grenades weren't powerful enough," Gu Nanfeng pondered. "Other generations of zombies were blown to bits, leaving only their tissues."
"Could you please stop being so detailed when you're eating?" Pei Sihao suddenly felt that the noodles he was slurping weren't so appetizing anymore.
“I also don’t think it’s because the grenade isn’t powerful enough.” Lin Yun, another thoughtful member of the team, said the same thing. Although they had never seen Lu Yuan throw this kind of grenade in the army, after observing it up close twice, they knew that although the coverage area of this grenade was not large, its power was definitely not small.
"Is it possible that the explosion didn't hit its head, and it recovered quickly?" Lu Yuan looked up from his lunch with a puzzled expression. "Like those kinds of healing abilities in novels, as long as it's not a fatal blow, it heals in a flash."
As Lu Yuan spoke, he gestured wildly with his hands.
"If that's the case, I'm starting to believe what the zombie 'new humans' said." Pei Sihao, a teenager addicted to the internet, had once read some analysis posts about various zombie literature online out of boredom.
He had seen an interesting post by someone who argued that zombies would inevitably replace humans and become "new humans." The poster listed various descriptions of zombies in novels. For example, they were said to be almost perpetual motion machines; although initially they were unintelligent and stiff, they evolved very quickly. Furthermore, many zombie kings in literature, aside from being pale and not needing to eat, were good-looking, not scary, and incredibly intelligent and powerful—almost perfect "humans."
Pei Sihao found it interesting at the time and discussed it with his classmates in medical school. He was scolded by his biology professor, who said he was a good-for-nothing. Gu Nanfeng also knew about this.
"It's so unfair. Zombies have evolved self-healing abilities, but we humans are still just as weak." Yang Xiao recalled his dream. He was certain that during the five years in his dream, humans hadn't evolved any superpowers like in most zombie novels. But he suddenly remembered that the zombies became increasingly difficult to kill as the story progressed. Thinking about it that way, it was very likely that the zombies had actually evolved back then, without them even realizing it.
“I told you, we have to get rid of this zombie as soon as possible.” Qin Yuan had already finished three bowls of instant noodles while listening to them talk. “If we don’t take it down, even if we escape from this resort, it will keep chasing us and won’t let us go.”
“Old Qin is right, and besides, we have nowhere to go for the time being.” Lin Yun finished eating, opened his phone, and projected the park map that Gu Nanfeng had previously shared onto the middle of the table. “We can’t just sit here and wait to die.”
