Chapter 400 Tax Case
Chapter 400 Tax Case
Yu Ru asked Yun Jixing to use her connections to get her into the detention center to see Mu Cheng.
Now, she saw the nightmare that haunted her. She stood in front of a one-way mirror; she could see Mu Cheng inside, but the person inside couldn't see her.
Mu Cheng was very thin, with a sallow complexion, and looked listless. Large bags hung around his eyes, making him look like a panda. Even a non-doctor could tell that he was seriously ill, and most likely incurable.
His half-dead state no longer inspired any desire for revenge. Besides, he was currently a wanted criminal; there was no need to bail him out and torture him.
Yu Ru watched for a long time, until her legs ached, before leaving with Yun Jixing.
After leaving the detention center, Yu Ru remained silent the whole way. Yun Jixing took her to her favorite Chinese restaurant for a meal.
The two ate their meal in silence until Yu Ru broke the silence. "I thought he was so successful, but I didn't expect it to be like this. But, it seems it should be this way. Most of those people back then, they were successful when they were young, they were proud in middle age, and they fell from grace as they were about to enter their old age. I feel like I didn't even get any revenge, and they were all arrested. I don't know why, but I feel a little lost."
Yun Jixing sat next to Yu Ru, the two sitting close together. Yun Jixing raised his hand and patted her head, saying gently, "Aru, then you can continue to take revenge on their descendants. They have fallen from power, but the ill-gotten gains they made are still protecting their family members. If you are not satisfied, you can tear their protection to shreds."
Yu Ru took a deep breath and exhaled softly. Her eyes were lowered as she gently stirred the soup in her bowl. "Let it go," she said. Her voice was soft, whether from relief or helplessness, it was hard to tell. "Too much, too much. The core members are all dead, so… I won't dig any deeper. I'll take it from their descendants when I run out of money. Otherwise, I'll waste my whole life on this kind of thing. It's really, really tiring. Don't you think? Isn't it tiring to take revenge on my classmates?"
At this point, she looked up at Yun Jixing. She only found out that Yun Jixing had helped her get revenge because she accidentally saw a video on his phone.
Yun Jixing was slightly taken aback, then smiled and placed one hand over hers. "How could I be tired? I'm so happy just thinking about avenging you."
"How did you retaliate against them?"
"I've sent all those who tried to assault you to Southeast Asia to work as prostitutes. As for the others, I'll retaliate in kind for what they did to you."
Yu Ru nodded, asked no further questions, and simply thanked him before leaning forward to hug him. Yun Jixing hugged her back, gently patting her back to comfort her. Yu Ru leaned against him, thinking of her former classmates, but her memories of them were fading; she couldn't quite remember them. She looked up at Yun Jixing, somewhat bewildered.
Since returning from prison, she felt her memory had declined. She guessed it might be due to the psychological trauma caused by the beating, leading to a relapse of her mental illness and resulting in some forgetfulness. Extreme emotions can damage the brain; during the worst period of her depression, she was like someone with dementia, needing to write everything down in a memo.
This feeling of losing control was unbearable. She felt like a piece of duckweed, unable to sink or float, just adrift in that stinking water. A mere gust of wind could blow away her meager sense of existence and place.
“My classmate…” Yu Ru stared at Yun Jixing with wide eyes, “What was I going to say…”
Yun Jixing noticed her unusual behavior. He saw the confusion in her eyes, drifting aimlessly until she reached him, enveloping his heart like a cloud. It was something light and airy, yet it caused his circulatory system to lose its way, leading to insufficient blood supply and a deep ache in his heart. He realized that to truly care for someone was to take all their emotions into one's own body and empathize with them.
"Aru, have you been experiencing memory loss lately, and often can't remember what you're supposed to do?"
Yu Ru nodded.
"It's probably due to psychological trauma," Yun Jixing said, patting her back gently. "Let's do something happy to cheer you up, okay? That way you'll slowly get better."
"what's up?"
"I checked the dates, and next month, your birthday is a very auspicious day. Not only is it an auspicious day according to the Chinese almanac, but it's also the day you were born. My dearest wife was born on this day, making it even better. Getting married would be even better. What do you think? Let's get our marriage certificate. I've prepared everything for the wedding."
“Not good,” Yu said decisively.
Why is it not good?
Yu Ru blinked, momentarily forgetting what she was going to say. After thinking for a while, she remembered, "Because if the wedding anniversary and birthday are combined, I'll receive one less gift."
"Hahahaha." Yun Jixing laughed, his whole body trembling slightly as he hugged Yu Ru. "Okay, I understand. You want to celebrate two holidays, so let's celebrate them separately. The nearest auspicious day is in half a month, what do you think? Half a month is enough time to send out invitations."
“Okay.” Yu Ru nodded and propped herself up. “Let’s eat, the food is getting cold.”
"it is good."
The two ate and chatted, and the conversation eventually returned to Mu Cheng. "Does Yun Jianyue also possess extraordinary skills? I have a feeling he can get away with this tax case. Mu Cheng is taking the blame for him, right? Can someone really take the blame for something like this?" Yu Ru asked.
"I'm not entirely sure either; I haven't investigated yet. However, I think he's probably planning to cut off his own arm to save himself. I thought it was a certainty that he would be arrested and sentenced to death, but now it seems I was too naive. I didn't expect Yun Jianyue to be so greedy yet so willing to splurge. So far, 142 people have been sentenced in this tax case. Although most of them haven't been arrested yet, the decisive attitude of the higher-ups has had a great deterrent effect and has to some extent cleaned up a part of the officialdom. Setting an example for anti-corruption and integrity is the most important goal."
"This case is from over twenty years ago, so it's difficult to investigate and faces a lot of resistance. The corrupt officials might even be among them, so they'll likely stop once the outcome is close. If the money Yun Jianyue received changed hands many times before reaching him, he might have a chance to clear his name of the biggest crime. Besides, he's different from ordinary corrupt officials; he's a talent. The current business environment in Cuicheng is so good, and he's responsible for 80% of it. He has both major faults and major contributions. Without him, Cuicheng's economy will definitely be unstable for a while, and many people will likely lose their jobs. Based on this, he can't be easily killed. Plus, he's willing to hand over billions to the state, so this case is probably secure."
“I found out he has a lot of businesses under his name. I didn’t look closely, and I thought it was money laundering, but it turns out he’s actually doing it,” Yu Ru said. After saying that, she picked up a piece of meat with her chopsticks and stuffed it into her mouth, making her cheeks bulge.
"Yes. He is very smart. If I hadn't survived once, the Yun family would be ruined now because of our family's trust in him."
"He stayed in your house for so long without any suspicion? He was very good to you."
"Yes. Before..."
Yunjixing's thoughts drifted back to a day long, long ago.
