Chapter 498 [Empire] Guard
Time passed silently in the cold wind, the air still filled with the smell of blood, but there was still no movement around. Standing at the door, everyone remained in a state of high tension, but in reality, nothing had happened.
The wind whipped by, stirring up dust and snow. The biting cold left a faint frost on everyone's cheeks. We all gripped our weapons tightly, our eyes constantly scanning the surroundings, fearing we might miss any sign of aberration. However, all our vigilance and anxiety seemed in vain. There were no Zerg footsteps around us, no distant roars, only the occasional rustle of wind and the gentle sounds of our breathing.
I felt that time had become unusually long, the air was filled with silence, and even the sound of my own breathing became particularly clear, as if every inhale and exhale could echo in this dead silence. We stood in front of that huge, solemn building, the broad steps at the door seemed particularly cold and desolate in the ice and snow, as if the whole world had nothing to do with us.
Although the battlefield appeared to be right before our eyes, in reality, nothing was happening. We simply stood there, in a row, silently gazing into the distance, awaiting orders, waiting for unknown developments. But as time passed, nothing happened. No enemy, no conflict, only cold wind and silence.
I stood there, my fingers beginning to go numb and my eyes losing focus. My gaze kept sweeping across the empty square, and I couldn't help but wonder, what am I waiting for?
The biting cold wind continued to rage. This massive, church-like structure stood like a defender of the frozen planet, yet its immensity and solemnity offered us no warmth. We stood at the doorway, our hands tightly gripping our weapons, our feet numb from the cold, but each of us never looked away from the distant battlefield.
In the distance, the occasional muffled explosion shook the air, as if a massive force was engulfing the distant darkness. It was the armies fighting. We knew the real battle was far from over. The Zerg tide continued to surge forward. Facing the onslaught of these ironclad beetles and alien insects, the army's defenses were constantly under pressure. Although it was still quiet here, we knew the fighting hadn't stopped. In the distance, the interplay of gunfire and explosions continued.
Standing here, guarding this gate, there's no retreat. Although we weren't participating in the actual fighting, we knew our mission was to hold this place until the order came, until final victory was achieved. No one could let their guard down, not even a moment's slack. We stood, eyes constantly scanning our surroundings, each breeze easing our tense nerves only to snap back into alertness. We dared not let down our guard for even a moment, knowing the end of this battle was unpredictable. We simply waited, waiting for orders, waiting for the battle to end.
Although no actual conflict has taken place here, the silent tension grows ever more intense. Everyone standing here is likely struggling internally, enduring silent oppression. Because we know that even if the battle is not over, we cannot leave. We must stand until everything is completely calmed, until our mission is accomplished.
And that tense and depressed emotion seemed to have quietly penetrated into everyone's heart, spread in every inch of air, and finally fixed in our silent eyes.
